Le’Veon Bell squandered a HOF career over ego and greed

If you are a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, you have to be looking at today’s news about former running back Le’Veon Bell with mixed emotions. Bell and the New York Jets chose to mutually part ways on Tuesday after the Jets failed to get any takers on a trade for the disgruntled running back.

This is a perfect opportunity to point out just how badly Bell mishandled his career and essentially opted for money over a Hall of Fame career.

Bell is 28 years old and is reaching that magic number of 30 when the value of running backs not named Frank Gore takes a huge nosedive. If Bell had stayed in Pittsburgh he would have made literally the same amount of money and his HOF career would still be on track. Bell was part of a very special offense with the Steelers but it is pretty clear base on what has happened over the 2-plus seasons, winning was never the motivation for him.

There will be plenty of Steelers who will lobby for Pittsburgh to sign Bell back. I mean at this point his value couldn’t get much lower. Pittsburgh doesn’t have much money to spend but at this point he’s nothing more than a one-year prove it guy.

But no, the Steelers don’t need to bail Bell out. And trust that he needs the Steelers more than the Steelers need him.

Next up, let’s talk about Antonio Brown. Another time.
