Texas A&M and SMU had the biggest wins to keep the top two spots. This week’s state rankings:
1. Texas A&M (3-1) | Last week: 1
The Aggies got fined by the SEC for violations of the league’s COVID-19 protocols but they will have a week off to fix that. On the field, they avoided their usual troubles in Starkville and might actually have a chance to run the table the rest of the way.
2. SMU (5-0) | Last week: 2
The Mustangs are 5-0 for the second year in a row thanks to Chris Naggar who has won conscecutive games with final play field goals.
3. Houston (1-1) | Last week: 3
The Cougars didn’t like the refs from the Big 12 in their loss to BYU but they don’t believe in conspiracy theories so let’s move on. The first half was pretty good. The fourth quarter, not so much. A trip to Navy is up next.
4. Texas (2-2) | Last week: 4
The Longhorns were off but kept losing in their handling of ‘The Eyes of Texas.’
5. Rice (0-0) | Last week: 5
To adjust a famous phrase: When does Rice play football? It’s coming Saturday against Middle Tennessee at an empty Rice Stadium.
6. TCU (1-2) | Last week: 6
The Horned Frogs were off. We’ll see if they can add Oklahoma to their upset list this season.
7. UTSA (3-3) | Last week: 7
Lowell Narcisse became the latest Roadrunner quarterback to be knocked out by injury this season in the loss to Army.
8. North Texas (2-2) | Last week: 11
The Mean Green had 768 yards of offense to set a school record in a win over Middle Tennessee. And they did it with their backup quarterback, Jason Bean.
9. Texas Tech (1-3) | Last week: 8
The Red Raiders used the bye week to change quarterbacks. Henry Colombi, a transfer from Utah State, had played earlier in the year in relief of Alan Bowman. The job is his now.
10. Texas State (1-5) | Last week: 9
The Bobcats have lost three in a row after South Alabama pulled away in the fourth quarter.
11. UTEP (3-2) | Last week: 10
The Miners game with Southern Mississippi was postponed by COVID-19 problems.
12. Baylor (1-1) | Last week: 12
The Bears had to pause football activities because of COVID-19 so we will pause their rankings. They are supposed to resume practice this week and play Texas.
