College football bowl projections: Oklahoma, Northwestern vault into major games after top 25 wins

Week 12 of the college football season is in the books, and we have two new teams in the New Year’s Six bowl projections. There have not been any changes to the College Football Playoff projections for a couple weeks now, mostly because those teams have either not played or held serve by winning games.

Back to those New Year’s Six projections. There was Bedlam where Oklahoma trounced Oklahoma State 41-13 to further shake up the Big 12 race. Iowa State remains in first place by a full game after roughing up Kansas State, 45-0. The Cyclones play at Texas next week, and a win would secure a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. A loss could create as much as a four-way tie at the top of the league standings.

The college basketball season will get underway in earnest this Wednesday, Nov. 25, but it’s already faced a few snags in the process. Some teams have already been forced to postpone, cancel or reschedule matchups because of COVID-19 outbreaks, and as recently as Monday, some multi-team events are taking hits as well.

The most notable team directly affected this week is Duke, which was expected to open its season Wednesday against Gardner-Webb. Gardner-Webb, though, had a positive COVID-19 test within its program, and Duke has opted to postpone the game. The Blue Devils will open their season on Saturday against Coppin State instead.

Elsewhere, preseason No. 2 Baylor is dealing with the virus at the top of its program. Bears coach Scott Drew announced over the weekend that he tested positive, and as a result, the Bears are out of the loaded field of the Empire Classic this

The Sun Devils departed on Monday for Connecticut. While the team was still en route, Rhode Island was announced as the replacement for Baylor. The winner of that game would advance to play the winner of No. 3 Villanova-Boston College.

College football scores, NCAA top 25 rankings, schedule, games today: Georgia, Auburn battle SEC foes

The stakes are ratcheting up this week in college football as teams jockey for positioning in the first batch of College Football Playoff rankings that will be released Tuesday. The headliner is No. 3 Ohio State’s game with No. 9 Indiana, but several other teams with playoff aspirations will be in action as well.

While No. 4 Clemson’s game at Florida State was postponed hours before kickoff, No. 1 Alabama, No. 6 Florida, No. 7 Cincinnati, No. 8 BYU, No. 10 Wisconsin and No. 11 Oregon will all be in action before the evening wave of games even arrives. It would likely take a significant upset at the top for someone other than the current top-four in the polls — Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Clemson — to crack the debut top four in the CFP rankings.

But it’s been a crazy year, and with a ton of ranked

College football picks, schedule: Predictions against the spread, odds for big top 25 games in Week 12

For the second straight week, the 2020 college football season has been absolutely ravaged by postponements and cancellations caused by COVID-19. With a significant number of games previously scheduled for Saturday now not being played, the slate has been somewhat reduced. Nevertheless, there are two massive games between undefeated, ranked BIg Ten teams that will carry the day and one of college football’s hottest rivalries taking us through the evening hours.

No. 3 Ohio State will look to retain its place atop the Big Ten when it hosts a No. 9 Indiana team that has surprised to start the season and boasts a defense that could give the Buckeyes some trouble. No. 19 Northwestern also hosts a No. 10 Wisconsin team that has been the strongest member of its division as of late but has only suited up for two games this season after a COVID-19 outbreak within the program.

The Buzz: Indiana (4-0) travels to Ohio State (3-0) this weekend looking to snap a 25-game losing streak to the Buckeyes, with the last Hoosiers’ win coming on Oct. 8, 1988. Indiana has been opportunistic this season, leading the Big Ten in take-aways (12), including 10 interceptions. Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields had thrown just three interceptions in 437 career pass attempts.
