Tucker Barnhart, who won a Gold Glove in 2017, was one of the three finalists among NL catchers for a 2020 Gold Glove.
Cincinnati Reds catcher Tucker Barnhart always prides himself on his defense, and nobody was better during the 2020 season.
Barnhart earned his second career Rawlings Gold Glove on Tuesday, which was announced on ESPN. He joined 10-time winner Johnny Bench (1968-77) and two-time winner Johnny Edwards (1963-64) as the only catchers in franchise history to win multiple Gold Gloves.
He edged finalists Jacob Stallings (Pittsburgh Pirates) and Willson Contreras (Chicago Cubs). Unlike previous years, the award was based solely on the SABR defensive index, which aggregates statistical and analytical defensive metrics from Statcast, Sports Info Solutions and STATS. There was no managerial or coaches vote because of the condensed 60-game schedule.
“Winning the first one in ’17 was like a dream come true,”
