Coaches Poll top 25: Clemson jumps Ohio State for No. 3 in latest college football rankings

There wasn’t too much shake up within the top 10 of the Coaches Poll top 25 after Week 13, but there was a change in the top four as Clemson moved one spot ahead of Ohio State to No. 3. The change comes less than a week after the College Football Playoff Selection Committee made the same ranking with the Tigers ahead of the Buckeyes. Clemson showed out in a dominant win against Pitt this week while Ohio State had its game canceled because of COVID-19 issues

This week’s movement is mostly notable for the teams that fell after suffering their first loss of the season. Oregon was at No. 11 in last week’s rankings and now checks in at No. 20 after a tough, fog-filled rivalry game loss to Oregon State and Northwestern fell from No. 13 to No. 17 after a loss at Michigan State. Both teams

Tomorrow’s Top 25 Today: Iowa State jumps Oklahoma, moves into top 10 of college football rankings

The new college football rankings aren’t going to have too much shake up near the top after No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Notre Dame both flexed their strength against ranked teams on Thanksgiving weekend, but we could have a new arrival to the top 10 after Iowa State’s win against Texas on Friday.

Matt Campbell has done something historic with Iowa State, knocking off both Oklahoma and Texas in the same season and leading the Cyclones to their first win in Austin since 2010. AP Top 25 voters are going to be coming out of the weekend with Friday’s win and Iowa State’s Big 12 championship chances on the mind, so a slight boost is in the cards.

The door has opened for an arrival in the top 10 with Northwestern’s loss at Michigan State and Oregon’s loss at Oregon State. The Cyclones are sure to jump back ahead

College football rankings: Ohio State jumps to No. 2, four SEC teams in top 10 of CBS Sports 127

CBS Sports graphic

The CBS Sports 127 has been one week ahead of most polls and college football rankings — not just this season but in general, though it did happen again seven days ago as Alabama was named the new No. 1 team in the country last week. The first-place votes had been getting shifted around between Alabama, Clemson and even Ohio State for a few weeks, and after the Crimson Tide blew out Mississippi State while Clemson needed a late rally to erase a double-digit halftime deficit against Boston College, enough votes changed hands to make the swap official.

Alabama was moved to No. 1, while Clemson settled in at No. 2. Even that reduced ranking for the Tigers did not last long because after losing 47-40 in double-overtime at Notre Dame, they are down again in the CBS Sports 127, our comprehensive ranking of every FBS team

College football rankings: Alabama jumps Clemson for No. 1 spot in CBS Sports 127

CBS Sports graphic

As the season rolls in November, the debate for “best team in college football” will only get more intense. The College Football Playoff Selection Committee is still two weeks away from making its initial thoughts public, so until then, we have other rankings to use as the launching point for discussion. The major polls stuck with Clemson as their No. 1 after Week 9, but our voters in the CBS Sports 127 — a comprehensive ranking of every college football team playing in 2020 — have ushered a change at the top.

Alabama has jumped Clemson for the No. 1 spot after showing total domination in a 41-0 win against Mississippi State on Saturday. Clemson didn’t fall far after its narrow comeback win against Boston College, checking in at No. 2 ahead of Ohio State at No. 3 and Notre Dame at No. 4. The rankings only

College Football Power Rankings: Ohio State jumps Georgia as Oklahoma, West Virginia surge

Looks like Dabo Swinney has a quarterback for the Notre Dame game, because he sure doesn’t have Lawrence. D.J. Uiagalelei threw for 342 yards in his first start, a 34-28 win over Boston College. Now comes the hard part: repeating that performance against a conference foe (for this season). — 7-0

Jaylen who? Devonta Smith caught 11 passes for 203 yards and four touchdowns against Mississippi State. Even without Waddle, the Crimson Tide have one of the most formidable receiving corps in the country. For the first time in Mike Leach’s 234 games as a coach, he was shut out at 41-0. — 6-0

Ninety seconds into the second quarter of his second game, Justin Fields had one incompletion for the season. There’s your indicator of how dominant Ohio State has been. The game of the week wasn’t much of one. Penn State

AP Top 25 poll: Ohio State jumps past Georgia, Notre Dame in college football rankings

When the AP voters were asked to put together their preseason college football rankings, they were instructed to include the conferences teams that, at the time, had postponed their 2020 season. In that balloting, Ohio State checked in at No. 2 with 21 first-place votes, just behind Clemson at No. 1 (38 first-place votes) and ahead of Alabama at No. 3.

The Buckeyes were removed from the top 25 once the AP poll started running midseason updates, and when the Big Ten announced its return, those teams who had initially postponed the season were once again made available for the voters to consider for their top 25 ballots. But when Ohio State returned to the AP poll, it was as if it had lost its place in line. After just one week of SEC play, the trio of Alabama, Florida and Georgia had jumped ahead of the Buckeyes, along with

Coaches Poll top 25: Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana make big jumps in college football rankings

Ever since their return to the college football rankings, teams from the Big Ten have been stationary objects in the pecking order. Voters from the Coaches Poll have moved teams up, down and around the league’s handful of ranked representatives, waiting for some results to justify the preseason expectations.

The Big Ten returned in Week 8 with its first of nine straight weekends of action with no byes or breaks, and the league delivered in a big way. There was a top-10 upset with Indiana taking down Penn State, a moment of validation for Michigan with its new starting quarterback Joe Milton and a near-perfect performance from Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields, who immediately reminded the country why he deserves a spot in the center of the Heisman Trophy conversation.

The Coaches Poll voters had some reactions to the Big Ten action, moving Penn State down 10 spots to

AP Top 25 poll: Texas A&M jumps in, North Carolina falls out of top 10 in college football rankings

Texas A&M’s climb in the Associated Press Top 25 continues as the Aggies have entered the top 10 in the latest rankings. After a comfortable 28-14 win over Mississippi State on Saturday, Texas A&M came in at No. 7 in the AP poll. A&M was previously ranked as low as No. 18 following a blowout loss to Alabama, but two straight wins over the Florida and Mississippi State have made Jimbo Fisher’s team one of the hottest in college football. In all, the SEC has four teams in the top 10.

Conversely, North Carolina’s time as a top-five team was short-lived. The Tar Heels fell nine spots to No. 14 after their 31-28 loss at Florida State on Saturday. North Carolina had risen quickly up the AP rankings since its season began, ascending from No. 12 to start the year to No. 5 within a matter of weeks. However, after

Coaches Poll top 25: Notre Dame jumps Georgia to take No. 3 spot in college football rankings

Notre Dame only scored 12 points in its bizarre 12-7 win over Louisville on Saturday. But, hey, a win is a win, and that was enough for college football coaches to put the Fighting Irish at No. 3 in this week’s Coaches Poll, released Sunday. That’s one spot above Georgia, which lost to Alabama 41-24 and fell from No. 3 last week to No. 4 this week.

Notre Dame is 4-0 and will look to make a run at No. 1 Clemson during its only year in the ACC as a full-time member. The Tigers, off a 73-7 shellacking of Georgia Tech stayed atop the coaches poll while Alabama garnered eight first-place votes at No. 2. Ohio State, which will start its season in Week 8, rounds out the top five.
