The Fighting Irish gave coach Brian Kelly his 100th career victory at the school, tying him with Lou Holtz for second place — five behind Knute Rockne. Notre Dame has won eight straight in the series between the FBS’s only Catholic institutions

Coming off a thrilling victory over Clemson, Notre Dame (8-0, 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) racked up a season-high 561 total yards against BC (5-4, 4-4).

This time the Irish wound up making some history for their coach at the Eagles’ expense.

Ian Book passed for three touchdowns and ran for another and the second-ranked Irish overcame an early deficit to roll to a 45-31 victory over BC on Saturday.

The Fighting Irish’s eighth straight win in the series between FBS’s only Catholic institutions gave coach Brian Kelly his 100th career victory at the school, tying him with Lou Holtz for second all-time. He is now just five behind coach Knute Rockne.

Brian Kelly’s Notre Dame legacy missing big win

After a decade in which Brian Kelly has, once again, made 10-win seasons, bowl victories and top-five rankings somewhat routine at Notre Dame, it’s easy to forget its previous 15-year run of irrelevance.

Bob Davie, Tyrone Willingham and Charlie Weis combined for a .576 win percentage, one bowl victory and endless talk about how the Fighting Irish would, except in old movies, never matter again.

They just haven’t won a big one, a really big one, in a long, long time (they are 1-18 against top-five teams since 1999).

No. 1 Clemson visits South Bend on Saturday, giving Kelly’s fourth-ranked team another crack at proving it belongs
