College basketball top 25 scores, overreactions: Kentucky has steep climb ahead, Gonzaga exceeding the hype

We’re officially one week into the college basketball season, with a small-enough sample to draw some takeaways but far too small to make any sweeping judgements. To make any conclusive statements about the season, a team, a player or a coach would be premature and, flatly, irresponsible.

But what fun would that be?

We’ve seen most teams play two, three, maybe four games in the early going. So based on those games, let’s make some sweeping overreactions from the first week of the college hoops season.

Kentucky has a long way to go

The Wildcats fell 65-62 to Kansas on Tuesday and dropped to 1-2 on the season, marking their first official losing streak since last December, when they lost close contests to Utah and Ohio State. This feels a bit different, though. This feels like Kentucky, for all its talent and all its length, has massive problems on the

Kentucky vs. Kansas score, takeaways: Jalen Wilson leads Jayhawks rally to hand Wildcats second straight loss

Kansas averaged 92 points in its first two games during a 1-1 start before the gravity of what the No. 7 Jayhawks are replacing finally seemed to be catching up with them in a showdown with No. 20 Kentucky on Tuesday night. The Wildcats held Kansas to just five points in the first 10 minutes, and suddenly it seemed painfully clear how much the Jayhawks miss last season’s star duo of Devon Dotson and Udoka Azubuike.

But that’s when another star emerged for Kansas. Redshirt freshman forward Jalen Wilson exploded to score 21 of his 23 points in the second half to lead the Jayhawks back from a 13-point first half deficit and to an 65-62 win over Kentucky in Indianapolis as part of the Champions Classic.

Wilson’s offensive outburst breathed life into a Kansas team that hit just 30% of its shots as senior leader Marcus Garrett dealt with

What to look for when betting on college basketball games, like Kansas vs. Kentucky, early in the season

Hey, welcome to your Tuesday afternoon. Before we get into today’s news and picks, I’d like to publicly thank the man who writes the morning version of this newsletter, Pete Blackburn. Pete led off this morning’s newsletter with the sentence, “welcome to December!”

Reading that sentence this morning was the moment when I realized it was December. Where does the time go? I swear, it feels like it was only yesterday when I could go outside and be amongst other people without the crippling fear that they were all capable of killing me just by saying “hello” a little too closely.

Anyway, hi! It’s December! I hope you’re enjoying your first day of the final month of this disaster of a year. I have been. I’ve been watching Champions League soccer on CBS All Access, and not just because I get it for free as a CBS employee. Tonight, I’ll

College basketball rankings: Losing to Richmond at home knocks Kentucky down in Top 25 And 1

John Calipari’s three best teams at Kentucky — the 2010 team, the 2012 team, and the 2015 team — were all built similarly. They were each led by a future No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft and supported by non-freshmen who spent multiple years in the program.

This year’s UK team isn’t built that way.

It is, instead, built with almost entirely new guys, none of whom project as a future No. 1 overall pick. And what history tells us about Calipari-coached teams built with almost entirely new guys, none of whom project as a future No. 1 overall pick, is that they usually, eventually, get really good or great but often experience ups and downs along the way. So what happened Sunday was an upset, sure. But there was nothing too surprising about these young Wildcats losing 76-64 inside Rupp Arena to an experienced Richmond team that

Edwards’ career game leads No. 11 Kentucky women by Belmont

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Dre’una Edwards scored a career-high 27 points, matched her career best with 15 rebounds and No. 11 Kentucky pulled away for a 70-50 win over Belmont on Sunday.

Edwards, the Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Year at Utah two seasons ago, was 11-of-19 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and had three steals and an assist.

It was Edwards’ turn to step up as the Wildcats (2-0) played their second-straight game without All-American Rhyne Howard and starting forward Tatyana Wyatt. Howard returns on Thursday against Kansas State but Wyatt will miss another game.

Edwards, who tore an ACL at the end of her freshman season, had just two points her her debut when Chasity Patterson scored 30 points. Patterson had 10 against the Bruins.

Kentucky led most of the way but didn’t put Belmont away until starting an 11-0 run in the middle of the fourth quarter

University of Kentucky fraternity sanctioned for a COVID-19-related violation

A University of Kentucky fraternity was sanctioned after some of its members were involved in a conduct hearing for allegedly violating COVID-19 and public health related sections of the student code of conduct, a UK spokesperson said.

UK’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter is under further university review, UK spokesperson Jay Blanton said and the Kentucky Kernel first reported. It’s unclear what the sanctions are and what specific events led to the university investigating the fraternity. Students who violate UK’s COVID-19 guidelines are subject to discipline.

Two other UK fraternities — Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Phi — are currently on disciplinary probation until fall 2021 for alcohol misuse and failing to follow UK’s COVID-19 guidelines, the university’s Office of Student Conduct website shows. According to the office, the disciplinary probation means that the fraternities are “not in good standing” with the university and subsequent violations could lead to
