Fifth-seeded Mainland eliminates fourth-seeded Millville; McCarthy ends 50-year coaching career

Millville High School field hockey coach Claudia McCarthy Knew the last game of her illustrious coaching career would end in a loss.

She just didn’t think it was going to happen so soon.

McCarthy’s 50th and final season running the Thunderbolts abruptly ended on Tuesday following a 3-2 loss to Mainland in an NJSIAA Southeast A quarterfinal playoff game.

“You know what, usually the last game of all of my seasons has been a loss,” said McCarthy, who has won more than 600 games. “We are always in the (state playoffs) and we have never gotten past Eastern. We faced them five straight times (at one point) in the South Jersey finals and lost all five times. So you know you are not going to end on a happy note.

“You just have to keep playing until you lose. I just felt and knew it was coming.”
