College Football Playoff rankings: Ohio State still No. 4 in after cancellation; USC drops to No. 20

Ohio State held on to the fourth spot in the College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday night after having its previous game canceled, landing behind No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Clemson for a second straight week.

The selection committee’s top seven teams were unchanged from last week’s rankings after the playoff contenders either won comfortably or didn’t play because of COVID-19 issues.

Texas A&M (6-1) was in fifth and Florida (7-1) sixth.

Ohio State (4-0) had to cancel its game at Illinois last week because of a spike in COVID-19 cases in the program. It was the second game of the season the Buckeyes have missed out on. One more cancellation would leave them ineligible for the Big Ten championship game and unable to play more than six regular-season games.

No. 7 Cincinnati (8-0) also had its last game canceled. The Bearcats are next scheduled

North Carolina and Texas were the two highest ranked teams in the Maui Invitational field this season, according to the CBS Sports Top 25 And 1. So the bracket has unfolded as I assumed it would. And now we’ll get a championship game on Wednesday featuring three five-star freshman bigs — UT’s Greg Brown and UNC’s Day’Ron Sharpe and Walker Kessler.

That’s a nice midweek afternoon treat.

Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.

North Carolina got to this title game courtesy of Tuesday’s 67-63 victory over Stanford in which Caleb Love, a five-star freshman guard, scored a team-high 16 points. He’s averaging 13.0 points, 3.3 assists and 2.3 rebounds through three games for a Tar Heels team that ranks 10th nationally in defensive efficiency. Meantime, Texas got to this title game courtesy of Tuesday’s 66-44 blowout of Indiana in which Matt Coleman, a senior guard, scored

The second set of College Football Playoff rankings were revealed Tuesday.

The top four teams in the first set of rankings were Alabama, Notre Dame, Clemson and Ohio State. The Tigers are the only team with one loss among that group, but the entire top seven teams remained unchanged from the initial rankings on Nov. 25.

No. 1 Alabama’s path to the national semifinals is easy. The Crimson Tide are a lock to enter the playoff as the top seed by winning out, and have even positioned themselves to lose once and still have a very strong case for the top four.

No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Clemson will very likely meet again in the ACC championship game. Even with a loss to Clemson later this month, the Irish are in solid shape to reach the semifinals. A blowout win by Notre Dame in the rematch would make things dicey for the Tigers, however.

Alabama remains atop latest College Football Playoff rankings

Dec. 1 (UPI) — The Alabama Crimson Tide again topped the College Football Playoff rankings as the top seven teams remained unchanged Tuesday night.

Alabama sat atop the CFP rankings for the 20th time — the most since the format was introduced for the 2014 season — after a dominant win over Auburn on Saturday. Notre Dame (No. 2), Clemson (No. 3) and Ohio State (No. 4) also occupied the same spots as last week.

Ohio State remained at No. 4 despite the cancellation of the Buckeyes’ game against Illinois on Saturday. The matchup was called off due to an increase in COVID-19 cases within the Buckeyes’ program, which included head coach Ryan Day testing positive.

Despite only playing four games this season, Ohio State was ranked ahead of one-loss Texas A&M (No. 5) and one-loss Florida (No. 6).

Selection committee chairman Gary Barta said the group discussed whether to

Ohio State football holds No. 4 spot in College Football Playoff rankings despite missing another game

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football’s inability to play at Illinois last week due to an increase in coronavirus cases did not affect the Buckeyes’ College Football Playoff standing.

Ohio State remained No. 4 in Tuesday’s rankings reveal — the same spot it held in last week’s first reveal for 2020. Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson remained 1-3.

No. 5 Texas A&M and No. 6 Florida rounded out the top six, which did not change from the first rankings reveal.

Cincinnati remained No. 7. Two-loss Georgia moved up to No. 8, taking the place of Northwestern, which suffered its first loss.

Ohio State has played only four games compared to seven, eight or nine for teams from most other conferences. The Buckeyes have one quality victory over Indiana — which held at No. 12 — and three wins over teams with a combined record of 4-13.

Alabama Remains No. 1 in College Football Playoff Rankings

To no surprise, the University of Alabama remained at No. 1 in the second College Football Playoff Rankings that were released on Tuesday night.

The Crimson Tide is coming off of a 42-13 drumming of Auburn and currently the top team in the sport in the Coaches Poll and Associated Press Top 25.

After Alabama, the committee didn’t make any changes to the top teams as Notre Dame, Clemson, and Ohio State round out the top four.

The Buckeyes had its game with Illinois canceled due to COVID-19 and is one more cancellation away from not being eligible for the Big Ten Championship.

Texas A&M and Florida are the first two teams out at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

Georgia is the only other Southeastern Conference team in the rankings at No. 8.

As a whole, the team that made the biggest jump was Iowa State, who

Notre Dame Remains No. 2 In Latest College Football Playoff Rankings

Notre Dame remained No. 2 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings in the second release from the committee.

Notre Dame is coming off a 31-17 road victory over North Carolina, who ranked 19th in last week’s ranking. The Tar Heels actually moved up two spots to 17th after its loss to Notre Dame. That certainly helps Notre Dame’s resume should the Tar Heels continue to win.

Notre Dame has clinched a spot in the ACC Championship game, and if No. 3 Clemson beats Virginia Tech this weekend the Tigers will clinch their rematch against the Irish.

BYU Football Improves to No. 13 in the College Football Playoff Rankings

The second edition of the 2020 College Football Playoff rankings were unveiled on Tuesday night. BYU dropped from #8 in the AP poll to #14 in the first CFP rankings, and the Cougars improved from #14 to #13 in the second edition of the CFP rankings. The Cougar’s original ranking surprised the ESPN analysts during the show and national analysts expressed their displeasure about BYU’s ranking throughout the week on twitter.

National analysts have already starting expressing their opinion about BYU’s #13 ranking like this one from Pat Forde:

The committee had the opportunity to re-think their original ranking for BYU, but the Cougars only moved passed Northwestern who lost to Michigan State last week.

These rankings will be updated each week and will ultimately determines which teams go to the College Football Playoff and which teams qualify for a New Year’s Six bowl. It’s important to remember that 2020
