Coronavirus: University teaching to move online from 9 December

Universities in Northern Ireland are to move all teaching online by 9 December to allow students to return home for Christmas.

Students have also been advised to take a Covid-19 test before they return to their family home.

testing is being offered to students
at Queen’s and Ulster Universities.

The Christmas guidance for students in Northern Ireland was published by the executive on Friday.

Many students were already learning remotely as many degree courses were being taught online, although thousands remain on campus.

Face-to-face teaching has continued in some subjects where it is regarded as necessary.

A small number of those courses may be able to continue to hold classes on campus after 9 December.

But students have been told that if they remain on campus after 9 December they may be in a situation where they have to self-isolate over Christmas.

Rapid Covid-19 testing is available for students

Ashford University’s 2020 Teaching and Learning Conference Examines Critical Issues in Online Higher Education

Throughout the conference, participants joined three keynote addresses, four featured speakers, six panel discussions, and 120 presenters representing 14 institutions to create actionable ideas that explore the value of traditional liberal arts versus career-focused curricula. These discussions were guided with this question in mind: “Must education in the 21st century take an either/or approach to what will prepare students to be ethical and productive contributors to society?”

TLC’s keynote speakers encouraged conference attendees to consider this question with creativity, empathy, and purpose throughout the discussions and panels. Keynote speaker Larry Robertson, award-winning author, strategist, and innovation advisor at Lighthouse Consulting, opened the conference by offering a framework for resiliency through creative experimentation during challenging times in higher education. During his keynote address, Dr. Craig Swenson, President of Ashford University, encouraged conference attendees to consider how education helps to preserve democracy throughout our nation’s evolution. Students could get a pay-out for lost teaching time at university – how would it work?

University students who’ve had their teaching disrupted due to coronavirus could receive compensation, after the higher education watchdog instructed a university to pay-out.

The Office of the Independent Adjudicator (OIA) told one university to pay £1000 to an international student who had lost out, according to a case summary published by the OIA.

Students all over the country have had their university experience disrupted by the pandemic, with thousands signing petitions and protesting against their treatment.

Who can claim?

While every student has faced some general disruption due to the events of this year, it’s likely that only those who have missed out on a lot of in-person teaching time, such as those on

Petition circulating at Harvard to stop former Trump administration officials from attending, teaching or speaking at the university

A petition circulating in the Harvard University student body seeks to ban Trump administration officials from teaching, speaking, or attending the institution because of their association with the president.

The petition, discovered by Fox Business’ Lydia Moynihan, represented the latest attempt to punish Trump associates. Students are demanding that if the university does associate with a Trump alumnus, they’ll “create and share with students transparent guidelines” for why.

Harvard, like other colleges, has been accused of censoring conservative viewpoints.

Last year, the university came under fire for requiring a “neutral” moderator to be present for controversial speakers. The policy reportedly allowed the moderator to impose a “two-strike” rule on interruptions and had to be registered with the Dean of Students’ Office a month in advance.

With COVID surging, schools nationwide suspend in-person teaching

With COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in the state spiking to record levels, bus drivers and teachers in quarantine, students getting sick and the holidays looming, schools Superintendent Scott Hanback in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, made a tough decision this week.

The school system, he decreed, would switch to remote learning until after Thanksgiving.

It seemed the only safe way to proceed after the myriad disruptions caused by the surging coronavirus.

“It has been very, very difficult,” Hanback said, adding that he has been doing “a lot of prayer, rest and trying to just take care of my mental health and physical health just so I can stay sharp.”

Facing equally grim conditions, school systems around the U.S. and abroad are taking similarly tough action. Boston, Detroit, Indianapolis and Philadelphia are among cities closing classrooms or abandoning plans to offer in-person classes later in the school year, and New York City may

As Frostburg State University resumes in-person teaching, concerns over safety mount

Frostburg State University resumed in-person classes Thursday, about a week after a spate of coronavirus cases forced the campus online and as questions mount over the school’s handling of the virus.

The number of cases has fluctuated in recent weeks — from 28 between Oct. 4 and 17 to 60 during the two-week period that ended on Halloween, according to the school’s coronavirus dashboard.

Twenty-six students were in isolation this week, school officials said Wednesday.

Fewer than 1,150 students are residing on campus this semester, along with 400 students who are living in a public-private apartment complex on the grounds. The school’s most recent screening data indicates 640 students and employees were tested on or off campus between Oct. 18 and Oct. 31.

As the situation becomes more unpredictable, some students are leaving the campus in northwest Maryland, retreating to their homes throughout the region, where they suspect

Experts urge review of maths teaching after study shows children lack spatial reasoning skills

Credit: CC0 Public Domain

Mathematics teaching needs to be rethought because children’s spatial reasoning skills are not developed enough, a new study says.

Pupils who took part in the research struggled with basic geometry problems, suggesting their knowledge about shapes isn’t checked often enough, and there needs to be more space on the curriculum for them to practice what they have learned.

Academics measured children’s spatial reasoning skills by asking them simple questions about which shapes fit together. Pupils could identify a main shape from an images made up of many but struggled to identify others.

Spatial reasoning skills help people to rotate shapes mentally to see how they would look in different directions. This is essential in professions involving IT and engineering. Experts believe the 1,357 grade 4 to 9 students in Japan who took part in the study struggled because they couldn’t both visualize shapes and apply mathematical
