Kim English rolled a basketball to Victor Bailey Jr. before Tennessee played a game at Thompson-Boling Arena last season.

It was a moment four years in the making.

The Tennessee guard and assistant coach argued about who would win a one-on-one game since Bailey was a junior in high school and English was at Tulsa and trying to recruit him.

“I have always taken pride in saying none of these kids can beat me one-on-one,” said English, an All-Big 12 performer at Missouri and former NBA player. “With redshirts, I always use it as their game day. … We are going to keep track and see what the record is after the season.”

English claimed the series 6-4. But Bailey says he won more of the pregame battles late in the season after English dominated early.

He got better in those games, while no one was there to see him.
