How a soccer club won a $1.2 million grant from DeVos’s Education Department to open a charter school

Here’s a new, rather remarkable story about charter school grants recently awarded by the Education Department — including one for more than $1 million that went to a soccer club in Pennsylvania that had no experience running a school.

This is one of a number of pieces I have run in recent years about the Federal Charter School Program, which has invested close to $4 billion in these schools since it began giving grants in 1995.

Charter schools, a key feature of the “school choice” movement, are financed by the public but privately operated. About 6 percent of U.S. schoolchildren attend charter schools, with California having the most charter schools and the most charter students.

Charters had bipartisan support for years, but a growing number of Democrats have

The claim: Trump won the 2020 election based on legal votes

A Nov. 17 claim posted to Facebook says President Donald Trump is the true winner of the popular vote in the 2020 election — if “legal” votes are considered.

“I have maintained since election night that Trump is the clear winner, counting the legal votes. But he’s only 23,800 votes away from winning by a squeaker even if you use the crooked vote tallies widely reported by Associated Press,” begins a post on the Facebook page for Clean TV.

Kellyanne Conway and Donald Trump said they won by a ‘landslide’ with 306 Electoral College votes in 2016. Now that Biden has 306, they’re crying foul.

  • Several White House officials have long touted President Donald Trump’s 306 Electoral College votes in 2016 as a “landslide” victory.
  • Trump himself has repeatedly referred to it as a “landslide” over the years.
  • But now that President-elect Joe Biden has secured 306 electoral votes, none of them are congratulating him.
  • Instead, Trump is refusing to concede.

When President Donald Trump raked in 306 Electoral College votes in 2016, he and the advisors close to him called the victory a “landslide.”

President-elect Joe Biden on Saturday secured 306 Electoral College votes — the same amount that propelled Trump to the presidency four years ago. But this time, Trump has not acknowledged the number, and instead pushed baseless or downright false allegations of

Trump won Ohio. What happens with the Electoral College?

There was a lot of confusion over how Donald Trump won the presidency in 2016. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote but Trump won the Electoral College. The Associated Press explains in this five-part animation series. (Sept 28)

AP Domestic

COLUMBUS – Americans don’t elect the president. They elect people who elect the president.

That group of 538 people is called the Electoral College and since it was created in 1788, the college has selected the next U.S. president. (With 69 electoral votes, President George Washington won the support of each participating elector in 1789.)

The popular vote elects governors, city council members, coroners and local judges – but not the president. In fact, five presidents have won the election without receiving a plurality of the popular vote, including President Donald Trump in 2016 and President George W. Bush in 2000.

That indirect method of selecting a president makes

Joe Biden won the Electoral College, now he should push to abolish it

  • Black voters across the country — especially in Atlanta and Philadelphia — helped secure Joe Biden’s Electoral College win.
  • But thanks to the way the Electoral College works, their votes count less than their white counterparts.
  • If Biden wants to push back against the narrative that the Democratic Party takes Black voters for granted, the least he could do is call to reform the way we vote for president.
  • This is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed are those of the author.

President-elect Joe Biden is the undisputed winner of the electoral college, and the first thing he should do in office is call to abolish it.

While most of the frustration over the Electoral College is focused on the amplification of rural votes over those in urban areas, there is also another problem with this archaic institution that deserves attention: its effect on the voices of voters of color.

Portland-area education measures won big on election night, with one exception

Portland-area voters on Tuesday resoundingly approved a bevy of measures that will pump millions into education initiatives, from universal preschool and a new home for Corbett Middle School to Portland Public Schools’ $1.2 billion effort to remake Jefferson High and pay for tech and curriculum upgrades across the district.

A new tax on incomes topping $125,000 to pay for free preschool for Multnomah County children ages 3 and 4 won with 64% of the vote.

Portland Public Schools’ bond measure passed with 75%. Riverdale district voters approved their own property tax measure, this one to fund essential staff and services, with 66% of the vote.

Farther east in Multnomah County, the Corbett district’s $4 million construction bond also handily won voter support, with 56% saying yes.

The only education measure in the three-county metro region that fell short at the ballot box was the Estacada district’s $23 million construction bond,

Electoral College’s Republican Bias Smaller Than When Trump Won 2016 Election: Study

The Electoral College has historically favored the Republican party, but this year the bias towards the GOP may be smaller than when President Donald Trump won the 2016 election, according to a new study.

The research comes with just over a week to go until the election day. Polls indicate a win for Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

Researchers at Columbia University used the results of the nine U.S. presidential elections from 1984 to 2016 to create a simulation to predict how the Electoral College vote may factor into the results of the upcoming 2020 election.

They noted that the system has favored the Republican party for a number of reasons, but found that the bias towards the Republican
